The Council expects that specifications for the content of the new Tikanga Maori course and the integration of relevant content for other core subjects will be developed by Maori law school academics in consultation with facilitators appointed by the Council. Research on Indigenous legal education funded by the Borrin Foundation is considered. Work of the Council The Council is an independent statutory body. The Council`s general activities relate to matters of public interest and regulation and focus on the Council`s responsibility for the quality and provision of training and practical legal education to any person in New Zealand or overseas wishing to be admitted as a barrister to the High Court of New Zealand. These general activities include: Te Ao Māori and Tikanga Māori Inclusion of Tikanga Māori in LLB degrees After consulting with stakeholders, the New Zealand Council of Legal Education decided to amend the regulations governing the content of the LLB degree in New Zealand to include the teaching and assessment of Tikanga Māori| Maori laws and philosophy. From 1 January 2025: The LLB degree includes teaching and assessing the general principles and practices of Tikanga Māori| Maori laws and philosophy relevant to each of the core subjects and legal ethics; and Tikanga Māori| Maori law and philosophy are taught independently as a new compulsory subject for the LLB degree. The Council will now begin seeking the agreement of the Minister of Justice to amend the rules, which is required under section 278(3) of the Lawyers and Conveyors Act 2006. These general activities include: Define and prescribe curricula for the examination and practical legal training of persons wishing to be admitted as barristers and solicitors in New Zealand Mediation of the offer of these courses Mediation of the moderation and evaluation of these courses Provision of practical legal training Assessment of qualifications, in particular those of foreign law graduates, and Lawyers wishing to practise in New Zealand Organization of the provision of research as needed and the offer Advice on legal education Management and conduct of certain examinations that must be taken by certain foreign and other candidates. Clearance certificates Processing time Please allow 6 to 8 weeks (up to 40 business days) from the date your application is received by the Commission. All applications received will be processed as soon as possible, but we cannot guarantee the date of receipt of your certificate. Please do not contact the Commission to inquire about the status of your application, as this will cause further delays. If you wish to submit a physical copy of your application, please note that we can only receive physical requests via our P.O. Box 5671 Wellington. If you use a courier service for this, please make sure that the mail you are using is able to deliver to a PO Box. Be sure to submit your application to the Certificate of Completion Division.

Your certificate must be sent within 8 business days of the date of receipt of the application, provided that payment and all correct documents have been received. The accelerated fee is $200 (GST included) and is in addition to the standard fee of $189.75 (GST included). Note that the fast lead time of 8 business days is not a guarantee as we rely on external organizations and institutions to verify your receipts. NZLP Auckland and Hamilton Exam NZLPE Candidates – November 2021 Session Note that you have been automatically moved to the next available session, which is July 19-20, 2022. New Zealand Session The next meeting for the NZLP review will take place on 22-23 November 2022.

You may also need to present your vaccination certificate instead of the same-day exam. Only abroad Due to Covid-19 and travel restrictions, no sessions abroad will be held, however, the Council may allow any candidate to take the NZLP exam in their home country provided they can meet the necessary requirements.
