Oxford is great (probably the best in Europe) if you want to go into industry or politics. People on this forum underestimate the effect of the name on your resume. If that`s what you want, great. Go to Oxford. You will have a great time and it will work very well for you. But if you want to stay in academia (or even one of the federals), you should go to UCL or LSE. The rankings speak for themselves. You`ll likely spend the same amount of time doing your PhD at UCL and Oxford, as both require a year of couse before starting research. Ultimately, it depends on what you want to do next. My only advice is that you will spend 4-5 years of your life there. So consider this factor. Oxford was a life-changing experience.
The department may not be what it used to be, but the experience of visiting Oxford remains. Our doctoral research program will broaden your knowledge of advanced economic theory and econometric methods. An essential feature of the MPhil and PhD process is the close collaboration between research students and supervisors. Specialist training is provided as part of the Southern Economics Doctoral Online Training (SEDOT) initiative, in which Oxford Brookes Business School (OBBS) is involved, enabling you to create innovative research papers and groundbreaking research. We offer specialized academic support and mentorship, as well as a commitment to your economic research. In addition to the academic requirements that are set, you must also meet the following requirements: BGSE is no better than Oxford. Neither Bocconi nor Cemfi. Oxford`s rankings are even better than these schools. The environment at the UPF is not good either. The scholarship is too low, the campus is s**t, the burden of TA/RA is ridiculously heavy.
The OP has probably already noticed these facts, as he/she does not want to stay at upf to do a PhD. Frankly, BGSE`s (or UPF MRES) rankings don`t look impressive either, despite their aggressive advertising campaign. You can`t even name 2 BGSE/UPF graduates who are now doing a PhD at LSE. That is a fact. BGSE teachers will probably force you to stay in their school, serving them as slaves for €970 a month (which is far less than the Oxford scholarship). A word of advice to the OP: don`t stay with the UPF after BGSE, just look for an AR position elsewhere and leave. The first year of the Other Mathematical Methods program begins with an untested preparatory course in mathematical methods. The first two semesters of the academic year focus on three compulsory courses in the core areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics.
All three courses are offered on two levels. While most MPhil students take courses at the « core » level, MPhil + DPhil students are expected to take one or more of the three courses at the « advanced » level in the first year and take additional advanced courses in the second year. In the third semester of the first year, you will choose from two completely new courses on empirical research methods and other mathematical methods. These courses provide the specialist skills required for academic or non-academic careers in our data-rich world and the technical tools for corporate research. Oxford has a thriving group of research students studying for the PhD in Economics. The DPhil is the name Oxford gives to his PhD, rather than the more well-known PhD name, used in most other universities, but the structure of the degree is similar to that of the PhD in major business colleges around the world. The MPhil provides a solid foundation for advancement to the doctoral thesis while providing the advanced knowledge and skills needed for a career as a professional economist in government or the private sector. Many MPhil graduates have gone on to remarkable careers in business or related fields. This is the recommended course if you have not done a previous thesis in economics. Your application will be assessed solely on the basis of your proven and potential academic excellence and the other eligibility criteria published under this section. References and supporting documents submitted as part of your application, as well as your interview performance (if interviews are conducted) will be considered as part of the assessment process.
Don`t be a prestigious w0re! BGSE is better than Oxford or if you really want the UK, go to LSE or UCL! The MPhil in Economics is designed to provide rigorous training in economic theory, applied economics and econometric methods. This is similar to the first two years of a doctoral program at an American university. The majority of DPhil students at Oxford first completed the Oxford MPhil in Economics by two years. You can also apply for DPhil if you have a master`s degree or equivalent in economics. Within the department, specialized research groups play a key role in bringing together faculty and graduate students in specific sub-fields, supporting and supervising our doctoral and postdoctoral students, and promoting research at the highest international level. Research groups represent an important interface between research centres and the department, e.g. econometrics and EMOD; Development Economics and SCDA. Other research groups facilitate interdepartmental cooperation, as in the case of the Working Group on Economic History and the Economic Historians of the Faculty of History. Each research group regularly hosts a series of seminars with external speakers, as well as a more informal workshop where members, including PhD students, present their ongoing research.
Students who have experience in the thesis in economics or related fields, or who have completed the master`s degree in development economics, for example, can apply directly for the PhD in economics.
